Usually I post about life as I would like it to be but today I'll share a little of my world the way it is! Above is my first attempt to make my own 'falling pages book' and below is one of my work stations. You can see a sign I'm putting together for the Kitchen Band's coming soon show.

Then my eye catches a thrift store find

So I grab a brush and the mod podge
and while that's drying...

Double Take

You know how it is when you come across something...for the second time? First time it just blinks in and blinks out until the time is right. Tick-Tock! When this gal, Iris Apfel, popped onto my screen the other day, I had a flash back only it was forward...a flash forward.

I don't see myself as a Red Hatter but if there was a BIG Black Glasses group, I'd be first in line. I would even cut my locks off for this one.

This lady has a flair for over the top and seems to have a following who find her fashion " — a more-is-more mix of haute couture and hippie trimmings that appears at a glance to have been blended in a Cuisinart." I've always thought of hallways as wasted real estate...until now. Of course one might feel the need to waltz down this one. one-two-three this side, one-two-three that side, then twirl while taking in some artwork or reading a title or two.

This little framed piece was in my mr's aunt's home. When the fullness of her life was complete, family came around to gather what they wanted...only I saw value in this tiny, hand-written piece of the past. Many years have passed so I don't recall where it sat in her home...on a dresser, on her desk, or maybe on the kitchen window sill for daily reflection. I can only wonder what experience lead her to pen this scripture and frame it. Perhaps because she never had any children, we will never know. I wish Aunt Det (short for Colette) could know that this piece of the past is treasured in my home and every time I pass and reflect...it makes my heart merry.

And as the stars circling my head (like in those cartoons) started the fade I knew why I had to sign that form releasing the park of all responsibility. I am fascinated with rooms full of books. Not sure why because I don't seem to be an avid reader. My learning style is more through pictures not words. As I write...a thought bubble begins to fill with words. Maybe that's why you are fascinated...knowing there is a mystery to be discovered in the words.

Maybe it's because I love layers of texture.

Just as books come in all
shapes and sizes...
massive libraries with room to twirl

but I'm more drawn into this room.
That vintage velvet tufted chair
seems to beckon...
come and sit.
Take a trip
to another place,
another time.

Maybe with me it's the hunt.

And I would love this one even if
there weren't any books,

leopard prints drive me wild.

How about a house with a hidden
passageway?

and even if you don't read much...
a stack of books can come in handy.

Christmas-time to share

Here's my little elf that Dixie gave me the other day.
We got together and had a party with our elf-selves.
And now she sits on the shelf
all by herself.

Every year I took a picture of him

traveled back in time for a night of
dining and dancing to the
40's swing band music of the
Sentimental Journey Orchestra.

They came for the annual celebration
held in the hangar of the
Commemorative Air Force of San Marcos, TX.

Two of the night's events were a
dance contest and silent auction.
And making his appearance again this year
was the famous kissing sailor,
Glenn McDuffie.

My art piece (see my last post) was raffled off and
the lady who wanted it the most...got it!

so cool is...
Beth Ann is a member of the
Devil Dog Squadron
and flies a B-25.

In between the crazy

As I decide what to write about life and how crazy it is, the thought popped into my head that it's not life that is crazy but that maybe it's me! Well I quickly popped that little thought bubble looming above my head. IT IS LIFE! But I'm thankful for moments set aside for creating which, as most of you know, can bring a calm to the spirit. My sewing machine can hum a happy tune...

One of my BFFs is connected with the Commemorative Air Force community in San Marcos, TX. Every year they host a dinner and dance to raise money to fund the restoration and care for vintage planes. My way of helping out was to make an art piece for the silent auction.

Kitchen Band

Here's one thang that keeps my life so full...
my mother-in-law, Melba--93 yr. young,
and the kitchen band at her
retirement home.
We are the three ukulele players
along with seven other ladies playing
wooden spoons, a wash board, and
a few pots and pans.

Our latest show "All About Girls"
was recently performed for all the
residents and again for a private
company luncheon hosted by
Horizon Bay, San Marcus.

The song list included such numbers as Ain't She Sweet, Five Foot Two, If You Knew Susie, Dinah Is There Anyone Finer, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, Ida Sweet as Apple Cider and Ramblin Rose. Melba does what she calls the walker waltz to show folks with walkers they can still dance. And then we close out the show with Goodnight Irene and Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye.

Just back from a quick trip to Dallas with my hubby. He was working and I was out spending it. Found myself at the Grapevine Mills Mall which had a pretty nice book store--Books-A-Million. Well being the magazine junkie that I am, I just had to have this one. Vintage & Victorian...two things that are great all by themselves but put together well...here's just a tiny bit of what's waiting inside.

My life in a nutshell...

Really, the other day I had to go out
on my back deck and
S C R E A M.
(glad we live in the woods)
But I did feel a little better
after that.

I don't even like roller coasters
but for a few months now
I swear I've been on one.

Wedding planning for my son's
big day next summer.

Just had the cake tasting this week
with him and the bride's mom and sister.
His love was working and she

Sorry, I know I said, "My life in a nutshell," and I usually am a chick of few words but I guess this is kinda like therapy. 36 years and just now taking my baby to college? Yes. His name is Samuel~~asked of the Lord. I had many years of hoping, wishing, and praying before he came. So it seems that my dear hubby and I have had our journey in sections. Many years of just us, then parents, and now looking forward to the next turn.

My MIL's Kitchen Band at the retirement home. (she's the one in the white shirt on the far right) We practice every Saturday morning. But not tomorrow...remember I'm heading for College Station. These ladies are so sweet. This picture was a couple months ago when they boarded their Horizon Bay bus and traveled to a nearby nursing home to entertain the 'old folks.' We do have fun and music is such a spirit lifter.

Although creep would best describe
my latest creation,
I'm soaring now that she's completed.

I chose a black pillow for the base of this fabric collage of vintage doilies, vintage trim and this vintage print of a girl in a fabulously embellished butterfly dress. Also added were a few sequins and pink glass beads from the last generation of crafters in the family.

I think it would provide a nice pop of color for any shabby chic setting. Whether on a bed, sofa, or chair she would remind those passing by to release their gypsy soul to new possibilities.

She'll be waiting here...

One step closer...

...to my second trip to the Round Top Antique Show in Texas. My introduction to this huge extravaganza was last spring when I just went for the day. That's when I saw miles and miles and miles of tents and I knew I must come back for the fall show. So with two BFFs, we have booked this charming B&B. Knowing that places fill up fast, I was so delighted to stumble onto this little jewel just 15 miles down the road. Oma's Country Cottage had a few open days in between a California lady that comes every year and another group coming the last weekend of the show. And if you are still looking for a place, I do believe there might be a few days open in the middle of the week.

Really!!! My heart tugs every time I run past my crafting table. I have two projects developing and hopefully next week I can complete them. For now...it's off to Texas A&M for their New Student Conference. Our only son, our only child will be heading to college in the Fall (end of August). I told a friend the other day that I wondered if it was possible to jump up and down with joy and cry at the same time. Joy for getting him to this point and launching him out into the world and sadness for the end of childhood.

Samuel is an awesome young man and we are proud parents looking forward to this next chapter in his book of life.

Candy's off to Kitchen Band practice this morning. My 93 yr. old MIL is a hoot and she dreams up ukulele shows. I'm her one-woman stage production crew. I put together music, make props, and sew costumes. At the moment we are working on a PATRIOTIC JUBILEE. But in between...

This month at her retirement home
they are celebrating the 1950's.
This week we were twisting and pony dancing
at a rockin' SOCK HOP!

I know I told you in my last post that I was resting, but that's not exactly true. The fabric collage I sold in Huntsville, on my recent visit, lead to another opportunity to send a few more RockCandy Creations to that town. Thanks to Karen who wanted one similar to 'REST' but with a photo of her mom at two years old. She also loved the 'I sing because I'm happy...' quote. Here is what came together after ripping, staining, burning, and stitching.

Sold a fabric collage piece (thanks Patsy, a co-worker with my sister) this last weekend while visiting my mother. Went to surprise her for Mother's Day in Huntsville, TX. (see the one I sold on my side bar) This one was almost finished before I left, and today I MADE TIME! to complete...

now I can rest.

Shades of pink

While at KC collage camp last weekend,
this was the bedroom at the Clark Mansion
where I played out my dreams of being
a princess.
A Victorian dream with delightful detail.

PINK was throughout the rooms.

Whether on fabric or the real thing.
A bouquet of freshness
adorned the dining table.

The life of a princess...
being called to a beautiful lunch.

Called away from the next room where
we ripped fabric, glued and sewed
fabric collages. And also paper...
bird nest paper, bark, & cardboard.

This was my heart piece we made.
I really enjoyed using the heat gun
to age the fabric, but be careful...
too much heat--paper burns!
So I named my piece
Hearts on Fire

Another fun thing...
experimenting with all the different stitches.

Sears Kenmore Computerized Sewing Machine

Whenever my man puts on his 'gonna built something' hat and starts grunting like Tim Allen, he's got this little smile on his face. And you've probably seen it on your guy's face...I'm gonna need new tools! Well ever since I returned from K C Willis collage camp I've been dreaming of this new tool. Machines! I love machines. Some girls want flowers and diamonds but give me a lawn mower, weed eater, or a John Deere Gator and I'm in hog heaven.

My sweet man ordered the last one Sears had and I'm on my way into the big city (Austin) to pick up my new toy.

Texas days are warming and green is sprouting

and the garden fairies are happy.

I've been pouring over my garden magazines
and I do hope that this year
I get a garden shed all my own.

My garden leans toward the wild and native side
but I would love to have a curtain of
roses in a corner of the yard...
safe and secure from the native and exotic deer

we have large fallow deer which are like
goats, they will eat ANYTHING!

People tease me all the time about the changes that happen in my nest. I am always fluffing, shifting and moving, adding or taking away. I love it! Traveling around blogland can get one's creative juices flowing and that's just what happened here. Saw the above photo on countryliving.com and things started flying round here...Time Flies...now that's funny...cluckle

My hubby's parents ran the oldest
Mom & Pop shop in Houston...
The Little Watch Shop.
So clocks and watches and parts abound.

This particular one was brought in for repair and never picked up. There was a black dot under the bird symbol which my man recognized so he very carefully scraped to reveal the whole. How it got here? Some other family's secret.

I must digress a bit from my last post...before discovering Theresa's Birthday giveaway I had been drooling--I mean scrolling through Mamie Jane's and all her creativity. I love junker's and their inspirational projects and Jane had one that I just had to try. Since I was going thrifting with some girlfriends yesterday I had a list of things to look for. One was a little shadow box and there it was at Goodwill for $2.99 (measures 12 x 12)

Off came the little roses
so I could display some
family treasures
from the past.

Added some vintage paper for the background
and sanded and rubbed on a little stain.

Now relics tucked away out of site
are showcased for all to see.
Like this silver pocket knife and
leather coin purse with needlepoint insert.

A little matchbox size of STANLEY'S Metal Seals,
H of course and still got some in it,
and a tiny purse.

This rough leather one has orange stitching along the bottom (original or a patch job?--family secret) holds this little key...to what we will never know--another family secret. And a pair of glasses or should I say glass since one is missing. Probably fell in the suitcase or trunk that the key goes to.

Why is it always the shoes?

Austin is know for it's music and one of the venues is Austin City Limits. ACL has a new home in the Moody Theater and there is a grand opening gala this Thursday evening. Now you've heard the old saying...it's not what you know but who...how true. My hubby knows people and we've been invited. And not just attending but we will be seated one the floor section at a dinner table. Among the entertainment are singer/songwriters and Steve Miller. So you ask...what does this have to do with shoes?

Guys wear...whatever...
but us girls...well you know the drill.
What to wear?
What the heck is Austin chic?

Cute but probably not, too low.

and these...cute but too high,
I'd probably break my neck!

These are too far...somewhere in the UK.

Oh man, these would be so cool. I'm wearing black skinny jeans (the magic of the skinny not working so well) and a black camisole. My chic is coming from a hand-painted shear poncho scarf thingy. At least that's my story. Now I love these vintage mink beauties and if I could find them or even make them (no time) I'd gladly change my scarf.

Playing in Switzerland

Here is just a peek of all the adventures we experienced in the green valleys of the Alps. The guys had ridden trottis down the mountain side. These are scooters you stand on while zooming downhill on the switch-back trails...no railings I might add. The day before they had tackled a six mile trek on a dirt (and rocks) trail with large fat tire trottis. They wanted me to experience the thrill too so we set out for the 'family trotti trail.' Taking a lift to the starting point, up, up, up we went over the green tree tops and meadow clearings with Swiss cows and their cow bells.

We were handed a helmet, a scooter, and pointed in the direction of the trail. That's it! Of course, before getting on the lift at the bottom of the mountain we had to sign a paper releasing them of ALL responsibility...we were on our own. This pathway was asphalt, not dirt and rocks, and my son let me know how wimpy this was in comparison. Samuel zoomed to the bottom in plenty of time to capture the photo finish of his old parents. My sweet hubby allowed me to cross the finish line first...what a gentleman. I swear I was going ffaaasssttt! all the while telling myself...stay up, stay up, stay up...be cool...show my son I am cool! I am cool but not sure I convenienced him.

These snow peeks could be seen from our hotel balcony. Taking two different styles of lifts and cable cars we arrived at the top to this restaurant in the round. A rotating structure which gives a 360 degree view while dining. Wonderful!

While up top we went out on the snow and also took a tour of an ice cave craved into the glacier.In Interlaken, Samuel got to hang glide with this fun-lovin' Assuie. Berne gave him an awesome view of the valley from a bird's eye view. What a blast!

That was Switzerland in a nut shell...
but it was so much more than
any pictures can portray.

...are incredible. Our destination for a bloomin' week in the most beautiful country in the world was the quaint little village of Saas Fee which is nestled in between snow peeks of the Alps. Hubby and I have always lived on the out skirts of where ever we are, not crowd people. So we found a jewel at the dead end of a winding road...no autos allowed. Romantik Hotel Beau-Site. We pulled our car into a parking garage, called the hotel and were picked up in this golf cart on steroids.

Our balcony was the one next to the hotel sign.

A town where the locals go to hike in the summer, ski in the winter or just to get away from it all. Of course this hiking boot planter hanging on a window of our hotel restaurant caught my eye.

More flowers at the entrance of the hotel...

and walking along the cobble stone streets.

These were in the next village...Saas-Grund. We took the bus over there for a bit of trotti riding...more on that later.

These were in Zermatt...another day trip we took to see the Matterhorn.

Our week in Saas-Fee came to an end way too quickly but it was time to head to Milan, Italy for hubby's business meeting. Along the way we spent a night in Interlaken so our son could have his first hang gliding experience...more on that later. These beautiful bells were in this bustling city. Just incredible...the imagination of our Creator.

Father & Mother-in-law with hubby and ME!

Heading back to Switzerland after 20 years. We were there for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary in 1990. I have changed a bit but the Matterhorn will most likely be the same. This time we will have our son with us. He with be 18 next month but was only a twinkle in our eyes back then. Going to try to capture the same angle and will share the new scene when I return.

Will be spending a week in and around Zermatt and packing in as much fun as possible. Then will spend another week in Milan, Italy. Hubby has business there. Samuel, me, and the ladies of the other husbands will be setting out on day trips to see the sites. I am so hoping there are at least one or two junkin' divas in the bunch. I'm the new kid of the group, so will be on my best behavior...for a while anyway.

Anyone know any bloggers in these places?
