I wonder...

WALKWAY
by Melba

Jagged bits of walkway
Half-hidden by the grass
Though weathered and broken through the years
Determined they would last.

Till all the children
Whose feet made noise
With hop-scotch and with marbles
No longer pass through memory land
To pause, to look, to marvel.

I dropped a nickel in a crack,
one time when I was young,
I cried and cried about my loss
until my brother come.

He dug and dug with sticks and knives
My coin he could not find
I wonder still if beneath that walk
There's a coin left behind.

My mother-in-law, Melba
at 10 years old
in 1928,
beside the sidewalk.

The first pic (she's 92) was from a recent trip
she and I made to her
hometown of Edna, Texas,
to see if the sidewalk was still there.

It was and being the writer that she is,
wrote the poem Walkway.
