I wonder...

by Melba

Jagged bits of walkway
Half-hidden by the grass
Though weathered and broken through the years
Determined they would last.

Till all the children
Whose feet made noise
With hop-scotch and with marbles
No longer pass through memory land
To pause, to look, to marvel.

I dropped a nickel in a crack,
one time when I was young,
I cried and cried about my loss
until my brother come.

He dug and dug with sticks and knives
My coin he could not find
I wonder still if beneath that walk
There's a coin left behind.

My mother-in-law, Melba
at 10 years old
in 1928,
beside the sidewalk.

The first pic (she's 92) was from a recent trip
she and I made to her
hometown of Edna, Texas,
to see if the sidewalk was still there.

It was and being the writer that she is,
wrote the poem Walkway.

Thanks for coming by my
Show & Tell & there's more at

ntic Home.

And my first time with Family Fridays
Keeping up with the Schultz Family

Hi again! Thanks for your comment on my Magpie poem ... all is fine here. I actually wrote that almost three years ago as I sat vigil during the last days and nights of my mother's life.
